12 Monkeys TV Series Headed To SyFy From Dark Knight & Man Of Steel Producer

The 1995 feature film starring Brad Pitt and Bruce Willis looks to be getting adapted by SyFy for a TV series with 12 Monkeys.

The Hollywood Reporter reports that producers on the original movie are bringing the new series to life for television.

Charles Roven (The Dark Knight Trilogy, Man of Steel) and Richard Suckle submitted the new 12 Monkeys pitch with it said there looks to be a 90 minute pilot picked up followed by the regular series, similar to what SyFy did for the relaunch of Battlestar Galactica.

The 12 Monkeys SyFy TV series also has a pair of writers attached with Terry Matalas (Nikita, Terra Nova, Star Trek: Enterprise) and Travis Fickett (Nikita, Terra Nova) as well as a director with Jon Cassar, known for 24.

"We have a great pilot, we're now flushing out what the rest of the series might be," Syfy president of original programming Mark Stern said.

The original 1995 12 Monkeys, a sci-fi film directed by Terry Gilliam, saw convicted criminal James Cole (Bruce Willis) sent back in time from the year 2035 looking for a cure for a virus. His mission is to collect an original strain of a virus that forced the denizens of the year 1995 underground, which was unleashed by the terrorist group the 12 Monkeys. As Cole is sent back he is placed in a mental institute where he meets Brad Pitt's character Jeffrey Goines.

The movie had a budget of around $30 million and brought in over five times that with $168 million leading to an Academy Award nomination for Brad Pitt for Best Supporting Actor.

Assuming SyFy picks up the 12 Monkeys television adaptation, it would join a slate of fresh new shows from popular and well-known creators such as Ron Moore's Helix,  Bryan Fuller's High Moon and M. Night Shyamalan's Proof.
