Make Mine Magic: Interview With Adam Gragg on J.K. Rowling Comic Book

Make Mine Magic

Interview With Adam Gragg

By Sabrina Steyling

It is no secret that J.K. Rowling is the most famous writer of all time. Her bespectacled teenage wizard has made her a billionaire.

It can be argued that writing about a billionaire can be just as nerve wracking, just ask Adam Gragg! And we at Cosmic Book News did so.

Though “Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows Part One” is due out in November of this year, we wanted to get a jump on it and talk with Gragg about his bio-comic which he did with Bluewater Comics.

COSMIC BOOK NEWS: What made you want to write a comic about J.K. Rowling? Are you a Harry Potter fan?

ADAM GRAGG: Yes – I’ve been a Harry Potter fan since I first read “Harry Potter and the Philosopher’s Stone.” As soon as I started it, I had to find out what happened next, so I got pretty involved in reading the series.

But, I wanted to find out more about the writer behind the books and was very surprised to find a woman whose life was just as exciting as her books.

When the people at Bluewater asked me to write about her, I was thrilled! In some small way, I got to be a tiny part of this incredible world she created. The most unusual aspect of it though, was when I was told they wanted me to be a character in the book, telling her story. That was not something I was expecting.

COSMIC BOOK NEWS: How did you get the information you needed on Ms. Rowling to complete your comic?

ADAM GRAGG: It took lot of research, which wasn’t easy.

J.K. Rowling is fiercely private about her personal life, so it took a lot of digging. A lot of my information came from various interviews with her, but I did use a few biographies about her.

COSMIC BOOK NEWS: Have you gotten feedback from Ms. Rowling?

ADAM GRAGG: I haven’t gotten any yet, but I hope she likes them! The people are Bluewater are working with her people…I’m just the writer.

COSMIC BOOK NEWS: Well, let’s talk about you, what made you want to be a writer and what inspires you?

ADAM GRAGG: I suppose an over-active imagination played a role in it, but to be honest, I didn’t set out to be a writer.

I originally wanted to be a penciller, but I think in hindsight, writing is my strength more so than penciling. I’ve come to meet and work with so many talented artists that it only reinforces my belief that I made the right decision.

And many different things inspire me, and they tend to be all around me in everyday situations. My favorite writer says, “If you want to see clearly, first open your eyes…then open your eyes again.”

Sometimes the smallest things right in front of you can be pure inspiration. You’ve got to stop looking at things with your every day eyes and see through to the core. As far as what I am inspired to write, I love writing about far off places, other worlds, other times – anything that makes you think outside of yourself.

COSMIC BOOK NEWS: I hear you’re relatively new to Bluewater. What attracted you to them, as opposed to another publisher?

ADAM GRAGG: I’m not opposed to any other publisher; it’s simply that Bluewater was the one that hired me. However, this is leading to opportunities with other companies, which is good for my career.

One of the things I like about Bluewater is that you get almost total freedom to do what you want with the book you are assigned to. I’ve pretty much been able to write whatever I wanted and as a result, many of my books have become just that – mine!

I’ve gotten to work on some great stuff in addition to JK Rowling and I doubt I would get the same opportunities with another company – but you never know. I’ve had a pretty good experience with Bluewater and hope for many more.

COSMIC BOOK NEWS: Adam, thanks so much for your time!

ADAM GRAGG: Thank you!
